Events On This Day

Mosquitos of Bomber Command made daylight attacks in West Germany and Holland. Osnabrück was main target of night raid by by the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

Russian Front. Russians managed regained lost positions in factory area of Stalingrad previously controlled by the Wehrmacht ground forces.

In the Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out an intensive bombing raid on the aerodrome at Maleme, Crete.

In Africa. Allied aircraft made widespread attacks on German camps.

In Australasia. In New Guinea Australians ground forces advanced towards Owen Stanley gap.

United States of America. United States of America bombers raided Kiska.

Ten Norwegians shot at Trondheim for alleged acts of sabotage.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Bengasi harbour, scoring large number of near misses but no direct hits. 1 heavy bomber bombs Bardia during return flight. Antiaircraft is heavy and accurate and fighters attack 6 heavy bombers over target. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers are lost.

Fifth Air Force. Aircraft complete movement of reinforced Australian 18th Brigade to Wanigela on peninsula between Dyke Acland and Collingwood Bays on East coast of Papua. This is part of move aimed at capture of Buna-Gona area.

Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 1 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, 10 P-39 fighters, and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters fly bombing and weather missions over Kiska. A large transport is bombed in the harbour which is left sinking. Hits are scored on a corvette and on a large freighter at Gertrude Cove and on a hangar in Main Camp. The radio station is damaged. A float fighters is strafed and set afire, and 6 Zeros are hit on the water.
