Russian Fronts. The Wehrmacht ground forces drive to Caucasus continued, Russians withdrew in direction of Armavir. In Stalingrad region fighting continued at Kletskaya and Kotelnikovo.

In Australasia. American and Australian forces started offensive operations against the Tulagi region of the Solomon islands.

The Luftwaffe carried out a major attack on East Anglian town in the early hours.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). Colonel Harry A Halverson relinquishes command of Hal Bomber Squadron, to be succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel George F McGuire.

Fifth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of 19th Bomber Group, led by Lieutenant Colonel Richard H Carmichael, hit Vunakanau airfield in coordination with Marine landings on Guadalcanal. B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack Lae, and a B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and a B-25 Mitchell medium bombers each attack a submarine in Gulf of Papua.

South Pacific (SOPAC). First Marine Division invades Guadalcanal. Eleventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers dispatched to bomb Kiska return with their bombs due to solid overcast. 4 more B-24 Liberator heavy bombers also depart for Kiska. 1 turns back with mechanical trouble, the others abort mission over target due to undercast. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 4 P-38 Lightning fighters and an LB-30 bomber fly 2 air coverage missions at Nazan Bay for Navy tenders.
