Russian Front. Fierce fighting round Voronezh and Stary Oskol The Wehrmacht claimed capture of Voronezh.

In the Mediterranean. Twenty-five Axis aircraft shot down over Malta in 24 hours The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers bombed Messina by night.

In Africa. Mobile columns engaged enemy at El Alamein. Intensive bombing by the British Royal Air Force.

In Australasia. Japanese bombers raided aerodrome on Horn island, Torres Straits.

South Pacific (SOPAC). General Millard F Harmon is designated Commanding General of United States Army Forces in the South Pacific (COMGENSOPAC).

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly weather, bombing and photo missions to Kiska, Attu, and Agattu. All bombs are returned to base due to weather. 1 seaplane is shot down.

Zone of Interior. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber of 396th Bomber Squadron sinks Kriegsmarine U-boat, U-701, off NC 34-50N 74-55W. This is first sub sunk by AAF aircraft during World War II.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour and shipping at Bengasi during 8-9 July 1942, while B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit harbour at Tobruk.
