Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a bombing raid on Ostend and Zeebrugge. Night attack on enemy convoy off Dutch coast.

In the Mediterranean. Seven enemy aircraft shot down over Malta.

In the Indian Ocean. Diégo Suarez, Madagascar, surrenders to British forces.

In Burma. Extremely hard fighting continues on Burma-China frontier.

Small daylight raids in Southeast two Luftwaffe bombers shot down at night.

General Lord Gort succeeds Sir William Dobbie as Governor and Commander-In-Chief, Malta.

Fifth Air Force. Battle of the Coral Sea, which began on 4 May 1942, approaches its climax as Allied naval forces intercept Japanese naval forces near Misima Island. Navy dive bombers sink the carrier Shoho. Allied forces lose an oiler and a destroyer. Allied air force bombers join the battle but their effect is limited. Several bombers attack Allied vessels by mistake.
