Events On This Day

United States of America heavy bombers raided docks and submarine base at Brest by day, other raids on factory and railway targets in France, Belgium and Holland. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made another night raid on Genoa.

In Egypt. Eighth Army pursuit of Erwin Rommel's Panzer army continued Hellfire Pass and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers heavily raided Buq Buq.

Russian Front. In the Stalingrad area Russian troops consolidated their positions.

Eighth Air Force. 34 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack U-boat pens at Brest.

Twelfth Air Force.

Air movement of Twelfth Air Force from United Kingdom to North Africa begins. Other elements of Twelfth moving from United Kingdom and United States are aboard Allied ships approaching Algerian and Moroccan coasts.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). 376th Bomber Group begins move from Palestine to Egypt.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe forces at Kakandeta in Owen Stanley Range. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack shipping at Maklo Island and seaplanes at Lasonga Island.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 2 B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack submarine base in Kiska Harbour, lightly damaging float fighters and a seaplane beached by storm. A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers flies reconnaissance over airfield West of Holtz Bay, and bombs submarine base and a previously damaged freighter in Gertrude Cove.
