Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made big offensive sweep over North France. Night attack on North West Germany and docks at Le Havre.

Russian Front, Rumanian 18th Division reported shattered in big battle on the Ukraine front.

In the Mediterranean, Air blitz on Malta continued. Nine enemy aircraft destroyed and many damaged.

In Africa, Cairo communique reported increased activity in the forward area by Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps troops.

In Burma, Imperial forces reported holding positions north of Thayetmyo, Irrawaddy river port.

In the Philippines, Huge Japanese forces attacking American-Filipino troops on Bataan Peninsula.

In Australasia, Japanese seizure of Lorengau, in the Admiralty Islands, reported.

General Marshall, Chief of Staff of the United States Army, arrived in London.

Ali Pasha Maher, former prime minister, arrested by Egyptian Government.

Harry Hopkins and General Marshall arrive in London for talks with British service and supply chiefs concerning integration of United States and British manpower and war production for action in Europe. General Marshall urges an offensive in the west to relieve pressure upon Russia, and promises a constant flow of United States troops, including many air units, to United Kingdom.
Ninth Air Force.

VA Spt Command (activated 1 September 1941) is redesignated Ninth Air Force. Headquarters is at New Orleans Army Air Base.
