Events On This Day

Russian Front. Fierce fighting in area of Armavir in Caucasus, and kotelnikovo and Kletskaya in Stalingrad region.

In China. United States of America bombers raided aerodrome and docks at Canton.

In Australasia. In Solomon islands operations, a Japanese force of cruisers and destroyers was driven off by United States of America naval units during the night of 8-9 August 1942.

United States of America. A Task Force of` the United States Pacific Fleet heavily bombarded Japanese ships and shore installations at Kiska, Aleutians.

Indian Congress Party resolution demanded British withdraw from India and threatened campaign of civil disobedience.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Canton area, bombing Tien Ho airfield and other targets in the vicinity and claiming 2 interceptors shot down.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-400 fighters dive bombers Kokoda and Yodda. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb runways and targets at Lae and Salamaua.

South Pacific (SOPAC). From this date through 23 August 1942, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers fly search mission covering the lower Solomons in order to detect any attempt to make surprise attack on the forces consolidating the Guadalcanal beachhead.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) LB-30 bombers, 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters on photo and bombing missions over Kiska cannot attack but Navy Catalinas also operating over and off Kiska hit freighters and transport, claiming 1 transport sinking, and score many hits on North Head and Main Camp.
