Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitoes attacked industrial and railway targets in Holland and North West Germany. Turin again raided by night.

Russian Front. Soviet troops continued to make progress in and around Stalingrad and on Central front in spite of violent Wehrmacht ground forces continued resistance.

In Australasia. Allied ground forces at Buna threw back enemy counter-attack. Allied bombers drove off six destroyers attempting to relieve Japanese forces.

Eighth Air Force. VIII Bomber Command study of air attacks on Kriegsmarine U-boat pens indicates that available United States bombs are incapable of penetrating roofs of the pens from any bombing level low enough to maintain accuracy.

Twelfth Air Force. Fighters of 31st and 52d Groups patrol in Oran-La Senia-Tafaraoui area. Weather prevents operations of all bomber and fighters units in East Algeria. British First Army obtains permission to withdraw from areas West of Tebourba and East of Medjez el Bab to more favourable positions slightly to the West from which to prepare for move on Tunis.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly fighter-bomber missions in battle area East of El Agheila.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound antiaircraft positions at Buna and area around Buna Mission and Cape Endaiadere as ground forces attack bunker positions on South edge of Buna. P-38 Lightning fighters hit wrecked vessel off Gona. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Gasmata airfield. 6 destroyers carrying troops to reinforce Buna-Gona beachhead are bombed by B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and a lone B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and turn back to Rabaul.

Eleventh Air Force. Attempted bombing mission of Attu and Kiska by 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 6 B-26 Marauder medium bombers, escorted by 8 P-38 Lightning fighters, is forced back by weather. Uneventful reconnaissance is flown by a B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and a B-26 Marauder medium bombers over Attu, Agattu, Amchitka, Kiska, and the Semichis.
