Events On This Day

Moscow announced that Kriegsmarine battleship Tirpitz had been torpedoed and damaged by Soviet submarine in Barents Sea.

Strong force of British Royal Air Force bombers raided Wilhelmshaven at night.

Russian Front. Russians evacuated Stary Oskol, fighting still going on west of Voronezh.

In Mediterranean. Day and night raids on Malta.

In Africa. In El Alamein sector our fighting patrols took some prisoners.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made intensive attacks on Japanese occupied territory.

Tenth Air Force. A single United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers piloted by Colonel Caleb V Haynes, bombs Japanese Headquarters at Tengchung near Burma border. Bad weather, pilot fatigue, and maintenance halt major operations for several days.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 404th Bomber Squadron arrives in the Alaskan Theatre with B-24 Liberator heavy bombers originally destined for North Africa. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies 2 photo missions over South shore of Kiska and over Little Kiska. Bombing mission cancelled due to weather.
