The British Admiralty announced loss of the trawler HMS Bedfordshire on 12 May 1942 by U-558 commanded by Günther Krech after being hit by one torpedo whilst on antisubmarine patrol.

Strong force of bombers raided the Ruhr by night.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht continued attacks on Sevastopol repelled with heavy loss.

In the Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force bombed aerodrome at Heraklion, Crete, and naval base at Taranto.

In Africa. Heavy attack on Bir Hacheim repulsed after fierce fighting.

In Burma. United States of America bombers made their first daylight raid on Rangoon.

In Australasia. Sydney and Newcastle, North South West, shelled by Japanese submarine.

Fourteen Czechs executed

European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA). European Theatre of Operations established by presidential directive. General Chaney is designated commander of all United States forces of European Theatre of Operations, United States Army (ETOUSA).

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers 30 flies armed patrol over Kiska and Umnak and discovers Japanese naval units in Kiska Harbour.
