The British Admiralty announced sinking of British cruisers HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Cornwall by Japanese aircraft in Indian Ocean 1,122 men from a total of 1,546 were later rescued by the cruiser HMS Enterprise and the British destroyers HMS Paladin and HMS Panther, and that an Italian 10,000 ton cruiser had been sunk by British submarine in the Mediterranean.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made, night raids on a number of localities in North Germany.

Russian Front, Berlin radio admitted that Soviet forces had by passed the Wehrmacht defence lines on Kharkov-Byelgorod road.

In Africa, In Libya a British column reported engaged with the enemy South West of Gazala. Alexandria had its third air raid in three days.

Indian Ocean Trincomalee, Ceylon, raided 21 Japanese planes certainly destroyed, 12 probably destroyed and two more damaged.

In Burma, American Volunteer Group (AVG) pilots shot down 10 Japanese aircraft and damaged 2 without loss.

In the Philippines, Washington communique indicated that American resistance in Bataan had ended.

In Australasia, Allied bombers carried out heavy raid on Rabaul, New Britain.

Eighth Air Force. Headquarters echelon is located at Bolling Field to prepare Eighth Air Force for move overseas.

Philippine Islands Japanese capture Bataan after 3 months. United States of America and Philippine forces surrender unconditionally. Japanese artillery emplaced on Bataan opens fire on Corregidor in conjunction with air attacks.
