Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out an intense raid on Osnabrück and surrounding area.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht claimed capture of Maikop and Krasnodar. Round Stalingrad Russians continued to put up strong resistance.

In Africa. United States of America Army Air Force heavy bombers made daylight raid on Benghazi.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked Japanese bases in North West Burma.

In China. United States of America bombers and fighters raided Haiphong in Indochina.

In Australasia. Allied bombers made day and night raids on Rabaul, Gasnata, Salamaua and Kokoda.

United States of America. American navy patrol planes attacked Japanese ships in Kiska harbour.

Mr. Gandhi and leaders of Congress Party arrested.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters of the 23d Group continue to support Chinese ground forces by harassing the Japanese at Linchwan. 4 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 3 P-40 fighters from Kweilin-Hengyang area, staging through Nanning, bomb docks and warehouses at Haiphong, causing considerable damage and claiming a freighter sunk in the harbour this is first Chine Air Task Force (CATF) raid over Indochina.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping and airfields at Rabaul and Gasmata while B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit harbour area at Salamaua.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 6 bombers fly armed reconnaissance over Kiska and Attu and hit Kiska.
