Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again carried out extensive raids on Turin and surrounding areas during the night.

North Africa. Docks at La Goulette and Tunis airfield raided by Allied aircraft.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces counter-attacked round Stalingrad and Rzhev, but failed to hold their ground.

Eighth Air Force. Special report on first 1,100 bombers dispatched by VIII Bomber Command, 17 August 1942 to 23 November 1943 justifies high-level daylight precision bombing.

Twelfth Air Force. Heavy rains stop most air operations in East Algeria and Tunisia. A few P-38 Lightning fighters fly reconnaissance South of Gafsa, and P-40 fighters fly intercept mission over Youks-les-Bains, damaging 1 aeroplane.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly fighters sweep over El Agheila region.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound Buna area as ground forces prepare for final assault on the village. P-40 fighters hit area along Sanananda-Soputa trail. In nearby Gona, following air and artillery bombardment, Australian forces overcome resistance, taking the village in hand-to-hand combat.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Command at Guadalcanal passes from General Vandegrift, Commanding General First Marine Division, to General Patch, Commanding General American Division. The battle-weary First Marine Division gradually withdraws from Guadalcanal during December 1942.

Eleventh Air Force. The daily weather aircraft cannot return to base due a sudden snow squall and crash lands at Atka Island. Attempted bombing mission to Kiska Harbour by 3 B-26 Marauder medium bombers and 6 P-38 Lightning fighters is forced back by weather.
