Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announce loss of the trawler HMS Solomon on 1 April 1942. Stated from Washington that Axis submarines have sunk two merchant ships in Gulf of Mexico.

In offensive sweeps over North West France, Hazebrouck and Bruges were attacked.

In Africa. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made day and night attacks on Benghazi harbour.

In the Mediterranean. Raids were carried out on Malta which resulted in 30 enemy aircraft being destroyed or damaged.

In the Indian Ocean. Japanese again raided Chittagong.

In Burma. Further withdrawal of British forces in central Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided occupied aerodrome of Magwe.

In Philippines. Japanese report their fleet in Manila Bay.

In Australasia. Of 16 Japanese aircraft attacking Port Moresby, three were destroyed.

Tenth Air Force. During 8-9 May 1942, 6 B-docks at Rangoon.

Fifth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and a single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack shipping and seaplanes at Deboyne Island.
