Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force Westland Whirlwind fighter-bombers were in action for first time against shipping off French coast. Soviet air force bombers carried out major raids on the following German cities Budapest, Berlin and Koenigsberg.

Russian Front. On South Volga front Russians forces again withdraw West of Stalingrad. The Wehrmacht forces broke into the suburbs at Novorossisk.

Japanese aeroplane, launched from submarine off coast, drops incendiary bomb on mountain slope near Brookings, causing small forest fire. This comprises total bombing of continental United States by enemy aircraft during World War II.

Army Air Forces. General Arnold submits to the Chiefs of Staff a plan (AWPD-42) estimating size of air force necessary to attain air ascendancy over the enemy and outlining suggestions for use of these forces in the several theatres. This plan, which by 17 November 1942 has been approved by War Department (WD) and the President, includes buildup of depleted Eighth Air Force in United Kingdom and contains the seeds of the Combined Bomber Offensive Plan (CBO).

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Tobruk harbour and shipping.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe Galaiwa Bay area on Goodenough Island. A-20 Havoc light bombers, in support of encircled Australian ground forces, strafe and bomb troops in Efogi Spur area.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers patrols Tanaga and Adak.
