Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine HMS Utmost which was sunk on 25 November 1942 40 nautical miles West North West of Capo San Vito, Sicily, Italy in by depth charges from the Italian torpedo boat Groppo.

In Libya. Bombing and machine gun attacks on Axis troops between Tripoli and Misurata.

North Africa. Daylight raid on La , Goulette by Allied bombers.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made clay and night attacks on Akyab, United States of America aircraft wrecked Myitnge bridge over lrrawaddy.

Twelfth Air Force. General Craig takes command of XII A Support Command. B-26 Marauder medium bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, attack marshalling yard and oil tanks at Gabes. B-26 Marauder medium bombers, sent against Sousse abort because of bad weather. A-20 Havoc light bombers, with P-40 cover, hit military camp at Kebili. Fighters escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft missions and fly reconnaissance and patrols. 1 P-40, on special mission, bombs German Headquarters at Kairouan.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers forced by overcast to divert from primary targets of Bizerte, strike La Goulette, the seaport of the city of Tunis. P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance missions.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers and heavy bombers jointly attack Myitnge bridge, knocking out a span and causing considerable damage to the entire target.

Fifth Air Force. Allied aircraft operating over Solomon Sea South of New Britain continue to attack vessels of convoy which departed Lae on 9 January 1943 after unloading reinforcements and supplies. Supply dumps and antiaircraft positions in Lae area are also bombed.

South Pacific (SOPAC). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 fighters and SBD Dauntless dive bombers support ground forces in Guadalcanal battle area. Strong point and ammunition dump are destroyed.
