Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. Destroyer HMS Nubian accepted surrender of Italian island of Linosa.

Eighth Air Force. 102 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit Bremen U-boat yards while a smaller force strikes at Kiel sub yards. Heaviest fighters attack to date against Eighth accounts for 26 heavy bombers, mostly of force attacking Kiel.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) and Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) carry out land and sea patrols and reconnaissance flights. North West African Photo Reconnaissance Wing covers areas of Sardinia, Sicily, and Italian mainland.

Twelfth Air Force. General House becomes Commanding General XII A Support Command.

Ninth Air Force. United States and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers attack Catania and Gerbini airfields, causing severe damage to aircraft, runways, hangars, and other installations. Heavy bombers claim 5 fighters. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers are down at sea.

Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Meza railway bridge on Mandalay Myitkyina line, causing minor damage.

Fourteenth Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers supported by 14 P-40 fighters, bomb hangars and depot area at Nanchang airfield.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields in Rabaul area and at Gasmata. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Dili and Koepang and bomb and strafe barges off Huon Peninsula, at Jabob Island, off Cape Gerhards, and South of Cape Cretin. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Malahang airfield and attack freighter in Humboldt Bay.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers again bomb Kahili airfield.
