Eighth Air Force. Over 100 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers of 3 groups sent to attack Woensdrecht and Lille, Nord airfields are forced to abort mission because of bad weather.

Twelfth Air Force. Elements of British Eighth Army enter Bari. At Salerno, United States Fifth Army, throwing reserves and service troops into line, and receiving much naval and air support, holds off enemy onslaughts against beachhead. XII Bomber Command B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack highways, road junctions and defiles, bridges, town areas, railroads, marshalling yard, barracks, and numerous targets, including several gun positions, in or near Avellino, Pompeii, Torre Annunziata, Auletta, Baronissi, San Severino Rota, Battipaglia, and Eboli. United States and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter-bombers, light bombers, and medium bombers of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fly well over 500 sorties, mainly against roads, bridges, and towns in battle areas, in or around Battipaglia, Eboli, Potenza, Torre Annunziata, Benevento, Auletta, and Avellino. Troop transports drop more contingents of 82d Airborne Division South of Sele River to strengthen beachhead, and also behind enemy lines near Avellino to disrupt enemy comm.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit marshalling yard at Pescara. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers, under IX Bomber Command, hit Potenza.

Fourteenth Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers are dispatched against Haiphong. First flight aborts due to bad weather but second flight reaches target area and bombs docks and shipping. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters severely damage 2 vessels at Chiuchiang.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Lae and barges in Hansa Bay. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kendari.

Thirteenth Air Force. Allied airfields and other facilities on Guadalcanal, at Barakoma, and at Munda are attacked by Japanese aeroplanes throughout the day. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with Army Air Force and Navy fighters escorts, bomb Kahili airfield 3 times during the day. More than 30 of the heavy bombers unload on dispersal and revetment areas and on runways, causing considerable damage. 8 Japanese interceptors are claimed shot down. 3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Vila airfield. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 6 B-34 Lexington bomber attack Vila area. P-39 fighters join Navy fighters and dive bombers in attack on Ballale Island airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. The 36th Bomber Squadron (H) departs for the Zone of Interior.

was used against the transport ship SS Bushrod Washington which was sunk.
