Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the destroyer HMS Blean which was sunk on the 11 December 1942 by the Kriegsmarine U-443.

North Africa. Tunis raided by, Allied by aircraft, enemy raid on Bone.

In the Mediterranean. Large-scale Allied air attack on Crete by night, Palermo also bombed.

Russian Front. Veliki Luki on the Central front and Elista, South of Stalingrad, occupied by Soviet ground forces.

In Australasia. United States of America dive bombers raided Japanese headquarters on Guadalcanal.

Twelfth Air Force. General Cannon becomes Commanding General, XII Bomber Command. Colonel Peter S Rask takes command of XII A Support Command. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit harbour at Tunis, while B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit marshalling yard. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on mission against shipping near La Goulette abort due to weather. Fighters escort bomber missions and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft transport runs and carry out routine patrols.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers strike harbour at Tunis, hitting turning basin, area just South West of it, and nearby rail junction. A few of the aircraft bomb South West and Southeast coast of Sicily.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack railroad bridge near Myitnge, claiming several hits on the target. The nearby airfield is also bombed.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields at Rabaul, Gasmata, and Lae, and attack shipping at Rabaul.
