Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. XII A Support Command and Desert Air Force (DAF) fighters carry out uneventful armed reconnaissance. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) hits Porto Civitanova railway junction, Pedaso, Giulianova, and Loreto.

Fifteenth Air Force. Weather cancels all bomber operations. Operations are restricted to weather reconnaissance from Decimomannu to Cape Linaro.

Fourteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit warehouses and barracks on Nampang Island. Weather prevents completion of several other scheduled missions.

Fifth Air Force. 50 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound Japanese positions in Sattelberg area and sink or damage at least 10 luggers in Hansa Bay. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Lae area. 50 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Gasmata.

Thirteenth Air Force. 45 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-34 Lexington bomber, and P-38 Lightning fighters attack Bonis airfield. A few other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strafe coastal villages in Empress Augusta Bay region.

Zone of Interior. XX Bomber Command is officially activated with Headquarters at Smoky Hill Army Air Field.
