Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Wellingtons dropped leaflets over France without loss.

In the Mediterranean. Over 100 British Royal Air Force (RAF) and Hellenic Air Force (HAF) aircraft bombed Crete.

Russian Front. Marshal Stalin in Order of the Day revealed that gains of Wehrmacht July offensive were everywhere liquidated.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Leverano, Crotone and Aquino airfield. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) medium bombers and fighters bomb and strafe Misterbianco, transport in Nicosia-Troina-Randazzo areas, and bridges and landing craft in coastal area around Santo Stefano di Camastra and Orlando. IJS Seventh Army mops up in West Sicily. British Eighth Army's 30 Corps meets firm opposition as it moves East from Leonforte.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters escort C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft to Licata. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers hit Reggio di Calabria airfield.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers again pound targets in coastal Northeast New Guinea, hitting Malolo, Asini, Busama, Voco Point, and Salamaua, blasting barges from Hanisch Harbour to Wald Bay and Cape Busching, and thoroughly bombing Bogadjim.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-40 fighters, along with Navy dive bombers, pound Rekata Bay area.
