Events On This Day

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 23-24 May 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb harbour and airfield at Pantelleria. During day, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) and Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters follow with more attacks on the airfield. P-40 fighters, P-38 Lightning fighters, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, bomb targets on Sardinia, including Carloforte harbour, factories, hangars, and oil dump at Alghero and seaplane base at Porto Conte, railroad bridge at Arbatax, area near Macomer, town of Iglesias, harbour at La Maddalena Island, harbour, warehouses, and dump at Terranova, and airfield at Olbia.

Twelfth Air Force. Colonel Lawrence P Hickey assumes command of XII A Support Command.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Villa San Giovanni ferry slip and railroad yards, and ferry terminal and nearby tanker at Reggio di Calabria.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Lakunai airfield at Rabaul while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit runway at Gasmata. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Penfoei.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 of 3 air ground support missions to Attu, together 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 11 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and 1 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft, bomb Attu. Third mission is cancelled, except for 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers which do not hear cancelling order. 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 14 P-38 Lightning fighters fly 3 more air cover missions over Attu but make no contacts.
