Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. Naples targeted for concentrated British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers night assault.

In Burma. Japanese positions near Kalemyo attacked by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) Blenheims.

Eighth Air Force. 93d bomb Group leaves United Kingdom for North African duty as demands for planned heavy bombardment in that area (invasion of Sicily and raid on Ploesti) make further inroads on strength of the Eighth. AM Leigh-Mallory is given responsibility for drafting air plans for invasion of Continent. His department is General Hansell. 39 heavy bombers hit Triqueville airfield. Smaller group strikes aircraft industry at Villacoublay. 5 YB-40 heavily armed escort bombers take off to accompany heavy bombers but none are able to complete the attack.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Wellingtons bomb Bari oil refinery during 25-26 June 1943. 33d Fighter Group (P-40) becomes first Group established on Pantelleria.

Ninth Air Force. During 25-26 June 1943 The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers, under IX Bomber Command control, bomb Messina.

Fifth Air Force. During predawn and early morning hours B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields and harbour at Rabaul and town of Lae. During midday B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Lae airfield and town of Salamaua. In early evening B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Penfoei.

Thirteenth Air Force. During 25-26 June 1943, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Ballale Island airfield and bomb Poporang-Buin-Faisi area. P-38 Lightning fighters strafe Rekata Bay area.

Eleventh Air Force. 16 bombers and 28 fighters fly 7 attack, weather reconnaissance and photo missions to Kiska and Little Kiska, starting fires. Intense machine gun fire damages 4 P-38 Lightning fighters.
