Events On This Day

In the Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Wellington bombers attacked San Giovanni in toe of Italy.

Eighth Air Force. 44th Bomber Group leaves for duty in North Africa as Eighth continues to send combat units to the Mediterranean campaign.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 26-27 June 1943, Wellingtons bomb Naples marshalling yard and port area.

Ninth Air Force. Beginning this date, 201st Bomber Wing (Provisional) 93d, 44th, and 389th bomb Groups of Eighth Air Force is attached to Ninth Air Force for operations. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit airfields at Kalamaki and Eleusis, damaging buildings, runways, and parked aeroplanes. Heavy bombers claim 7 fighters shot down.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe occupied areas at Dumpu, Kaigulin, and Kaiapit while A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe barges and shore installations at Labu Lagoon. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Taka, Saumlakki, Boeroe Island, and Malo Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield and hit Ballale Island. A single heavy bomber on armed reconnaissance bombs Munda airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers make a radar run over Kiska but return with their bombs due to weather. Later, 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 7 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kiska Main Camp area and vicinity North of Salmon Lagoon. 14 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Gertrude Cove, camp areas, and North Head, while 7 others abort due to weather. 2 P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance over Segula Island but overcast prevents observations.
