Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made heaviest raid to date on Berlin.

North Africa. Fears fighting continued in area of El Hamma north of the Mareth Line. In Central Tunisia United States of America troops captured Fondouk.

In Burma. Air battle over Arakan area resulted in 12 Japanese bombers being shot down, ten by Hurricanes without loss.

Hundreds arrested and curfew imposed following sabotage at Aarhus, Denmark.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters attack machine gun installations Northeast of Maknassy and train at Mezzouna, and hit Djebel Naimia. NACAF fighters on patrol claim several aircraft shot down. Weather prevents completion of anti-shipping sweep by Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers.

Tenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers mine Rangoon River for second consecutive night.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Lae and Salamaua. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Saumlakki and attack harbour and shipping at Bogia.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 fighters join Navy aircraft in attack on Vila airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Adak and 6 Amchitka based B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attempt unsuccessfully to attack naval targets. From Amchitka, 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 6 P-38 Lightning fighters (of which 1 turns back with mechanical trouble) provide cover for United States surface force until 1300. 6 P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers depart Adak for a second cover mission, but do not find surface force.
