Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the corvette HMS Erica which was escorting a convoy from Benghazi to Alexandria when she struck a mine and sank off Derna on 9 February 1943.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again raided Maupertus airfield by day, also a heavy night raid on St. Nazaire.

North Africa. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps attack repulsed near Beja, in North Tunisia.

Russian Front. Fierce battle round Kramatorskaya still in progress.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Fighters and fighter-bombers hit troops, tanks, and motor transport along Tunisian battle line South West of Mateur, at Sidi Nsir near Pont-du-Fahs, Northeast of Bedja, and in Goubellat area.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters from Dinjan knock out bridge near Kazu and bomb and strafe Nsopzup. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers from Kunming, with fighters escort, bomb storage area at Mangshih. 8 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers from Ondal hit Thazi railroad junction.

Fifth Air Force. A lone B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs Lae airfield.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and Navy aircraft attack Vila airfield. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield and hit Ballale Island.

Eleventh Air Force. Reconnaissance mission is flown over Kiska, Buldir, Semichis, Attu, and Agattu, with negative results. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Main Camp area.
