WWII Timeline

Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 158 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers bomb locks and submarine pens at Saint-Nazaire. Beaumont-le-Roger is hit by smaller attack.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 27-28 June 1943 Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Messina marshalling yards and Villa San Giovanni. The following day, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Leghorn, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit airfields near Olbia and Alghero, B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack Milis landing ground, and fighters hit Decimomannu airfield.

Seventh Air Force. Bombing mission against Nauru from Funafuti is hampered by engine trouble and bad weather. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers had crashed at Palmyra the previous day while en route from Hawaiian Islands to staging base at Funafuti. Of the 18 arriving at the forward base, 2 are released from duty because of engine trouble, 2 crash on takeoff, and 8 are grounded after second crash. 6 heavy bombers are airborne for the mission, 2 abort, 2 fail to find Nauru because of heavy front, and 2 drop bombs on the island, with unobserved results.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Gertrude Cove, Little Kiska and southern Main Camp area through holes in overcast. Mission is partly ineffective because of faulty bomb release mechanisms.
