Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Venturas on shipping at Rotterdam. Also a heavy night raid was carried out on St. Nazaire.

North Africa. The British Eighth Army occupied Mareth, Toujane and Matmata.

In Australasia. Sixty Japanese aircraft raided Oro Bay, New Guinea 25 were shot down.

Eighth Air Force. 70 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers hit Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yard.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Weather again prevents completion of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers shipping strike. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters attack trucks South of Maknassy and near Gabes, hit gun positions and tanks near Mezzouna, where fierce ground fighting is taking place, and fly patrols and reconnaissance throughout battle areas of Tunisia. Bombers hit roads, railroads, and military transport in Sousse and Sfax areas during 28-29 March 1943.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters launch fighter-bomber attack against El Hamma, which enemy has held as escape corridor through which troops have been withdrawing during 27-28 March 1943.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers and heavy bombers on individual missions attack Langgoer, Dobo, Gasmata, and barges and small boat off Finschhafen and Kerema.

Thirteenth Air Force. Last remaining personnel of the battle weary 11th Bomber Group (B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers) leave South Pacific (SOPAC) to return to Hawaii. P-38 Lightning fighters and Corsairs hit seaplane bases at Poporang and Shortland, claiming 8 aircraft destroyed, and attack destroyer East of Shortland Island, leaving it listing.
