WWII Timeline

Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force 76 heavy bombers attack Aero engine works at Le Mans. Heavy cloud over target prevents attack by most of the 232 planes dispatched. No planes are lost. Both of the 2 YB-40 heavily armed escort bombers dispatched as escorts are forced to abort. The lack of success of the YB-40 heavily armed escort bombers in this and previous missions in June 1943 convinces General Eaker, Commanding General, that if the escort bomber is to succeed it must be able to carry bombs and must be endowed with the same flight performance as the B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Wellingtons during 28-29 June 1943 raid ferry slips and marshalling yard at Messina. Photo reconnaissance aeroplanes cover areas in North and South Italy, East Sicily, Sardinia Corsica, and South France.

Ninth Air Force. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers hit Reggio di Calabria airfield. P-40 fighters patrol sea off Cap Bon area, no incidents.

Fifth Air Force.
