Events On This Day

In night raid on Cologne The British Royal Air Force (RAF) 161 aircraft 116 Lancasters, 35 Halifaxes, 8 Stirlings, 2 Mosquitos dropped one hundred 4,000 lb. bombs in less than twenty minutes.

In Libya. The British armed forces occupied Zelten.

Russian Front. Battle of Stalingrad comes to an end with all remaining Wehrmacht forces in Stalingrad capitulated eight more generals captured from the 6. Armee.

Australasia. Allied aircraft bombed Japanese supply dump: at Kaukenau, Dutch New Guinea.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers, in coordinated attacks, bomb El Maou airfield at Sfax. A-20 Havoc light bombers, with P-40 fighters and P-39 fighters escorting, bomb munitions dump in battle area. Other fighters fly cover missions for ground forces along battle line and carry out reconnaissance operations.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe aircraft, antiaircraft positions, and targets at Kentung.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields at Rabaul. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack shipping between Lolobau Islands and New Britain and North of Open Bay, bomb Gasmata runway, and hit Timika. A-20 Havoc light bombers continue to bomb and strafe positions on high points between Mubo and Komiatum.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, along with escorting P-40 fighters and P-38 Lightning fighters, attack shipping off Shortland Island. Of 20 Japanese aircraft which intercept, 9 are claimed destroyed. Other B-26 Marauder medium bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, and P-39 fighters attack Munda airfield.
