Events On This Day

North Africa. Under enemy pressure,our troops withdrew from Jebel Mansour in Tunisia.

In the Mediterranean. Palermo harbour raided by Allied bombers.

Russian Front. Stary Oskol, West of Kursk, and Lzyum in the Ukraine occupied by Soviet troops.

In Australasia. Japanese troops evacuating Guadalcanal under cover of air attacks.

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini became Italian Foreign Minister in place of Ciano appointed ambassador to Vatican.

Twelfth Air Force. Bad weather cancels heavy bomber and medium bombers missions. Fighters fly reconnaissance missions (strafing trucks near Jabal Ash Shamsi), local patrols, and escort for C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb railroad station area at Rangoon. P-40 fighters bomb railway cut West of Meza, and having blocked the line, strafe a halted train. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Myitnge bridge but fail to knock out the target. P-40 fighters hit targets in Kentung area.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Rabaul airfields while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers blast docks and shipping at Amboina. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Dobo. A-20 Havoc light bombers continue to bomb and strafe forces around Zaka, Sappa, Mubo, and Gona. Heavy bombers carry out individual attacks on shipping off Papua and New Britain and hit town of Rabaul and airfield at Gasmata.
