The British Admiralty announced the loss of the minelayer HMS Welshman which was returning from Malta to Alexandria when she was sunk about 35 nautical miles east Northeast off Tobruk, Libya, by one torpedo from the Kriegsmarine U-boat U-617 on 1 February 1943.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a heavy night raid on Essen and surrounding areas.

North Africa. In Central Tunisia Allied troops entered Sidi Bou Zid and Pichon.

Russian Front. Soviet troops continued to advance South West of Rzhev. The Wehrmacht claimed to have recaptured Lisichansk on Donetz front.

In Australasia. United States Navy (USN) surface warships shelled Japanese positions in Solomons.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit convoys North West of Bizerte while B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack motor vessels between Tunisia and Sicily. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters and medium bombers hit Djedeida, Sidi Nsir area, and ground forces in Bedja-Mateur areas.

Ninth Air Force. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bomber Command, bomb harbour at Naples during 4-5 March 1943.

Fifth Air Force. A-20 Havoc light bombers pound Lae airfield while heavy bombers, operating individually, hit Lae, Alexishafen, Gasmata, and Saumlakki.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies negative weather reconnaissance mission over Kiska, Semichis, Attu, Agattu, and Buldir.
