Events On This Day

Russian Front. Soviet long-range air force aircraft raided enemy aerodromes in Orel and Briansk area. The Luftwaffe again raided Gorki.

Eighth Air Force. Eighth Air Force continues to be hit by requirements for North Africa as 389th Bomber Group, originally scheduled for United Kingdom, is diverted by War Department (WD) to Mediterranean.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Following night raid by Wellingtons on Pantelleria, heavy bombers, medium bombers, light bombers, and fighters of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) and Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) pound the island throughout the afternoon.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb gun emplacements at Pantelleria airfields.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Wewak, Lae, Madang, and Kesup, hitting town areas and airfields, and strafe sampans on Sepik River.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters along with Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) P-40 fighters and Navy and Marine fighters, intercept large force of fighters escorted dive bombers on mission against Allied shipping off Guadalcanal. Fighters from the newly opened Russell Islands bases initiate the interception. A running fight develops and extends down to Guadalcanal. More than 20 Japanese aircraft are downed. 9 Allied fighters are lost but all the pilots are recovered.
