Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the destroyer HMS Harvester which was sunk on 11 March 1943 while escorting convoy HX-228. HMS Harvester rams the Kriegsmarine submarine U-444 but is disabled and the U-boat is finished off by French corvette Aconit. HMS Harvester, is now stationary in the water, and is torpedoed and sunk by U-432 which is in turn brought to the surface by French corvette Aconit's depth charges and finally destroyed.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made another night attack on the Ruhr, with Duisburg as main target.

North Africa. The Afrika Corps announced evacuation of Pichon, Central Tunisia.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Fighters continue reconnaissance of North half of Tunisia and Straits of Sicily and hit enemy movement and defences over wide areas between Sfax and Enfidaville.

Ninth Air Force. 340th Bomber Group is assigned to Ninth Air Force. P-40 fighters in fighter-bomber role attack Sfax, as British Eighth Army, in pursuit of retreating enemy, reaches position a few miles to the South West on the coast.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe airfields and town and dock areas at Madang. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Kitchen Creek-Mubo area. Single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack barges at Bogia, Alexishafen, and Finschhafen, and hit town of Wewak. Vehicles at Lorengau on Manus are strafed.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies reconnaissance over Kiska, Attu, and the Semichis. P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance over Kiska.
