Events On This Day

Ninth Air Force. Bad weather grounds bombers. Fighters provide air cover for United States 8th and 29th Infantry Divisions.

Twelfth Air Force. Weather cancels all flying except for weather reconnaissance by a few United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters.

Tenth Air Force. 22 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly fuel to Kunming. Many other Troop Carrier and cargo sorties are flown to numerous China-Burma-India (CBI) terminals.

Fourteenth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack town areas, river shipping and trucks in and around Kiyang, Lingling, and Yoyang. 11 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Tien Ho and White Cloud airfields and 2 bomb Siangtan ferry. 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit 4 freighters South West of Hong Kong. Nearly 100 P-40 fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers on armed reconnaissance over vast areas of Southeast China attack numerous targets including troops, railroad targets, river shipping, warehouses, and bridges. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters hit targets in Hanoi lower Red River area.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Menado area and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Wasile Bay villages. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers strike Galela in force while P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb Djailolo airfield. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb Boela airfield and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers sink lugger in Bara Bay. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Mongosah airfield while fighter-bombers hit Manokwari airstrip and villages in Schouten Islands and strafe and bomb Wewak Airfield and surrounding areas.

Seventh Air Force. Saipan based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters make strafing and rocket attacks on Pagan and Aguijan. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on snooper and armed reconnaissance missions hit Iwo Jima and Marcus.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on a shipping sweep attack a small fishing fleet between Paramushiru and Onnekotan.
