Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb harbour, warehouses, and railway at Metkovic. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit railway stations at Frosinone and in the Colleferro, Segni area. B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb marshalling yards at Grosseto and Lucca. P-40 fighters support United States Fifth Army in mountains East and Southeast of Cassino, and, with A-36 Apache dive bomber, hit railway targets South or Rome at Aquino, Frosinone, Palestrina, and Castelforte. Other P-40 fighters hit Avezzano, and A-36 Apache dive bomber blast trains and vessels in vicinity of Tarquinia.

Fifteenth Air Force. The 449th and and 450th Bomber Groups (B-24 Liberator heavy bombers) become operational, giving the Fifteenth a total of 8 heavy bomber groups. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Mostar airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Reggio Emilia aircraft factory. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters fly escort.

Tenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and A-36 Apache dive bomber knock out bridge North of Hopin, destroy warehouse and railroad tracks in the area, and destroy a locomotive and damage numerous railroad cars at Tigyaingza.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers, medium bombers, and a few fighters, attack Madang area, bomb Uligan Harbour, and hit Bogadjim and Bogadjim Road. Fighters strafe Sag Sag sawmill in Cape Gloucester area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers hit positions near Arawe. Heavy bombers bomb Kendari and other targets on Celebes.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit concentrations on Siposai and Kondakanimboko Islands.

Seventh Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, staging through Tarawa, bomb shipping and shore installations at several locations on Wotje, Maloelap, and Jaluit Atolls. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers from Tarawa hit shipping and gun positions on Jaluit.
