Events On This Day

Mr Churchill and General De Gaulle meet at Marrakesh. They discuss cooperation of a French expeditionary force in invasion of Europe and the degree of authority of the French inside France after the invasion.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack marshalling yard and docks at Ancona. P-40 fighters hit tanks and trucks at Palena and South of Sulmona, and positions and vehicles near Cervaro. A-36 Apache dive bomber hit positions in same area.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Mostar airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit aircraft factory and marshalling yard at Reggio Emilia. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters provide escort.

Tenth Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and A-36 Apache dive bomber attack Loilaw area, severely damaging a bridge, hitting ammunition storage building, and scoring direct hits on large barracks.

Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighters strafe 6 steamboats and many smaller craft on the Yangtze at Puchi. 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on sea sweep bomb 200 ft vessel South of Swatow, reporting the ship destroyed. 8 fighter-bombers hit Sadon, and 4 bomb Atson railroad yards and Lao Kay railroad station.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Fighters and bombers attack Alexishafen, Madang, Bogadjim, Uligan Harbour, and area East of Saidor. Cape Beechey is strafed by P-40 fighters.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Buka seaplane base and Kahili supply area. Fighters strafe Cape Dunganon area and along Ramusian River West of Teop. 7 squadrons of Allied fighters cover Navy dive bomber strike on Tobera. 2 squadrons of B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Vunakanau airfield. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Taharai airfield and afterwards some hit targets on New Ireland.
