Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. Organisation charts show a further net loss during June 1945. 16 units have been transferred to other Headquarters within the theatre, 1 sent directly to the Pacific, another redeployed to United States, 3 disbanded, 9 provisional units discontinued, and 5 attached units relieved, plus a Brazilian unit attached for operations being released. Only 2 units are added to the Twelfth.

Army Air Force, China Theatre. Headquarters Army Air Force, China Theatre is established by a General Order from Headquarters, United States Forces, China Theatre. General Stratemeyer is appointed Commanding General. Subordinate elements are Tenth and Fourteenth Air Forces, China Air Service Command, and a photo.

Fourteenth Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack bridge at Lohochai, causing little damage. 4 fighter-bombers pound hill positions and hit artillery emplacement South West of Hsihsiakou. 3 others bomb and strafe enemy held temple and a troop area at Likuanchiao.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers support ground forces in Cervantes sector, North of Baguio and pound gun positions and other targets in Kiangan area as Luzon campaign officially ends at midnight. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers again pound Balikpapan. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound targets in Northeast Borneo and cause considerable damage at Tawau and Tandjoengredeb.

Twentieth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 509th Composite Group, scheduled to deliver first atomic bomb attack on Japan, begins combat flight training from Tinian. For most crews, this involves 5 or 6 practice missions such as a navigation training flight to Iwo Jima, bombing Rota during the return flight; 2 or more short bombing missions against Rota or Guguan Island and 1 long bombing mission against Truk and 1 against Marcus all run in flights of from 2 to 9 very heavy bombers.

Seventh Air Force. 2 Guam based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack boat basin on Marcus.
