Events On This Day

United States Army Air Force (USAAF) units, including Tenth Air Force and United States components of Eastern Air Command, are withdrawn from Southeast Asia Command and returned to operational control of Army Air Force. Eastern Air Command is inactivated, along with the Strategic Air Force and Combat Cargo Task Force.

Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 4 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit railroad tracks and cars in Chenghsien and Kaifeng areas, knock out bridge at Sinyang, damage bridge at Lohochai, and strafe antiaircraft positions at both bridges. 30 fighter-bombers damage 4 bridges, hit several railroad targets and river craft, attack trucks and troops, and strafe numerous targets around Shihkiachwang, Changsha, Yoyang, Yenkoupu, Taohwaping, Changanyi, Chiuchiang, Liuchow, Tsingkonp, and Paoching.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and fighter-bombers attack Formosan targets, with 90 heavy bombers concentrating on Takao. Other planes hit Koshun, Giran warehouses and command targets, and blast transportation and command targets over wide areas of Formosa. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighter-bombers hit targets in Cagayan Valley, in Balete Pass, and in Baguio and Ipo areas. Fighter-bombers also hit Negros Island. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and fighter-bombers hit troop concentrations on Tarakan Island and occupied building area at Belait. Fighter-bombers also blast airfields at Kudat, Jesselton, Keningau, and Labuan.

Seventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Ie Shima strafe buildings, barracks, and seaplane ramps at Amami-O-Shima.
