Type IA U-boat

History

Type IA was designed as Ocean going U-boats. Only two U-boats were built in this class and that was U-25 and U-26. They were both constructed by AG Weser, of Bremen. This class of U-boat, although they performed adequately, were difficult to handle an extremely poor dive rate.
U-25 was commissioned on the sixth of April 1936 and was commanded by Eberhardt Godt, during U-25 wartime career she sunk eight ships, and was lost with all hands in August 1940 in the North sea.
U-26 was commissioned on the 6th of May 1936 and was commanded by Werner Hartmann, and during U-26 wartime career. She managed to sink 11 ships in total, finally succumbing to continued attacks from HMS Gladiolus and aerial attacks from an Australian Sunderland. U-26 was scuttled on the 1st of July 1940 all hands survived.
