U-boat Type XVII

History

Type XVII was designed as submersibles and had a Walter type hull, with three watertight compartments. Armament consisted of two torpedo tubes at the bow, these two classes of U-boat Type XVIIA and Type XVIIB were purely for research purposes.

Type XVIIA four of this class were built between 1942 and 1944. Two were constructed by Blohm & Voss, of Hamburg, U-792, and U-793.

Two were constructed by F. Krupp Germaniawerft AG, of Kiel, U-794, and U-795.

Type XVIIB three of this class were built between 1943 and 1944. They were all constructed by Blohm & Voss, of Hamburg, U-1405, U-1406, and U1407.
