The 30 mm MK 108 (Maschinenkanone 108) was a machine cannon
designed and produced by
Rheinmetall-Borsig
in 1941. The 30 mm MK 108 primary for use was against Allied
heavy bombers. The 30 mm MK 108 was an extremely effective
air to air weapon, on average, only needing four hits to achieve
a Kill with high explosive ammunition. The only real drawback
to the 30 mm MK 108 was the low muzzle velocity.
The 30 mm MK 108 was of light construction and was particularly
easy to construct due to the fact that over 80% of the weapon
was made stamped parts. The weapon was belt fed using electric
ignition and was charged and triggered by simple, compressed
air. There were several types of ammunition used armour piercing,
high explosive and incendiary.
