Events On This Day

British bombers made surprise attack on Heligoland. Another force raided power station and oil refinery near Bethune.

In Africa, During night of 20-21 May 1941 advanced mechanised troops destroyed enemy post on Sollum hill. Benghazi raided during night. In battle of the Lakes, two enemy divisions now trapped between forces advancing from north and south. Italian counter-attacks repulsed with heavy loss. Farther south Italian brigade Headquarters. and three colonial battalions captured.

Near East, Situation in Crete reported to be well in hand. Landings of airborne troops continued. Enemy occupied aerodrome at Maleme. Attempts at seaborne landings frustrated by Navy. Large Kriegsmarine convoy sunk.

In Iraq, Roundup of rebels in Falluja area proceeding.

Some activity by Luftwaffe aircraft in coastal areas.
