Marauder medium bombers bomb El Aouina airfield. Fighters
escort medium bombers, strafe tanks near Station de Sened,
and destroy several trucks and staff cars in the Faid area.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Naples area and Crotone airfield
and city area under storm conditions. During late afternoon
and early evening The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators
hit Heraklion airfield. 1 heavy bomber hits Kastelli and Pediada
airfield on return trip.
Tenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers from Gaya bomb Rangoon marshalling yard, scoring over
30 direct hits on the target. P-40 fighters hit Headquarters
at Lonkin, burning 12 barracks. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
hit rolling stock in marshalling yard at Paukkan and along
rail line from Shwebo to Sagaing.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers pound forces in and around Mubo while
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Lae area. A single B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bombs saw mill area at Ubili and a B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers hits targets in Rabaul area.
Thirteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with light fighters cover from
Guadalcanal, bomb Buin and shipping in nearby Shortland Islands
area. Fighter opposition is aggressive, 3 heavy bombers, plus
3 fighters, are shot down. This is the baptism of fire in
the Solomons for the B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of 424th
Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group.
Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance is flown over Kiska,
Attu, Agattu, the Semichis, and Buldir Island. 5 heavy bombers,
6 medium bombers, and 10 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb and
strafe Kiska targets including Camp area, landing strip, and
shipping. Of 5 float-type fighters which attack, P-38 Lightning
fighters shoot down 3. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 B-25
Mitchell medium bombers fly patrol mission over Amchitka and
Little Kiska. A B-25 Mitchell medium bombers shoots down a
floatplane.
