Events On This Day

Italy declares war against Germany.

Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb town of Alife, road junction at Sessa Aurunca, and airfield at Tirana. XII A Support Command, supplemented by Desert Air Force (DAF) fighters, supports United States Fifth Army, which begins assault crossing of Volturno River on 40 mile front during 12-13 October 1943. Fighters and fighter-bombers hit troop and tank concentrations, trains, trucks, and command lines in forward areas, especially around Ortona, Giulianova, and Campobasso. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) light bombers join in the attacks, hitting road junctions in Vairano, Carinola, Dragoni, Vasto, Terracina, and Minturno areas.

Tenth Air Force. Japanese fighters appear in strength over Sumprabum to attack over the Hump flights. The enemy evades United States patrols and shoots down 3 transports. Fighter-bomber offensive against airfields in Burma from which fighters might operate against Hump transports opens with attack by P-40 fighters on Myitkyina.

Fourteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on sea sweep off Southeast China hit shipping in Amoy harbour, claiming 1 freighter sunk and another damaged.

Fifth Air Force. More than 100 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers are sent against Rabaul. Bad weather forces the bombers to turn back, but 40 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit targets on New Britain including Hoskins, Lindenhafen, Gasmata, and Cape Gloucester.

Eleventh Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters unsuccessfully intercept 8 medium bombers attacking Massacre Bay and the nearby airfield.
