Pre-Dreadnoughts

History

Pre-dreadnought battleship is the common term for all of the types of sea going battleships constructed between the mid-1890s and 1905. Pre-dreadnoughts substituted the ironclad warships of the 1870s and 1880s. Created from steel, and shielded by hardened steel armour, pre-dreadnought battleships conveyed a main battery of extremely heavy guns in turrets aided by one or more secondary batteries of lighter weapons. They were driven by coal-fuelled triple-expansion steam engines.
