Personal Information

Günther Prien born in Osterfeld, pushing province of Saxony (Germany), and raised in the Leipzig, Günther Prien joined the German merchant Navy in 1923 training for 12 weeks at the Siemens College in Finkenwerder in Hamburg, before going to see it as a cabin boy. Unfortunately, his the ship was caught in a vicious storm and ran aground near Dublin, the ship was abandoned and later written off. Günther Prien and his fellow shipmates were taken to Bremerhaven and later Hamburg, Where Günther Prien was given his papers as a seaman. Günther Prien passed his captain's examination in January 1932. He also joined the National Socialist party in 1932.
on the 16th of January 1933 Günther Prien joined the Reichsmarine, which was filling its ranks with personnel from the merchant Navy, Prien underwent normal training and served on the cruiser Königsberg
it before he was posted for U-boat training at Kiel. After passing out Günther Prien was assigned to U-26 as a first officer of the watch. U-26 was commanded by Werner Hartmann.
