U-boat Type XB

History

Type XB was designed as Ocean going U-boats and had a double hull, with seven watertight compartments. Armament consisted of two torpedo tubes at the stern, fifteen mine shafts each side of the hull, and one 3.7 cm Flak 42, one 2 cm Flak 30 were installed, and one 10.5 cm L/45 SK C/32 deck gun. Out of the eight Type XB constructed only two survived the war.

Type XB eight of this class were built between 1939 and 1944. They were all constructed by F. Krupp Germaniawerft AG, of Kiel, U-116, U-117, U-118, U-119, U-219, U-220, U-233, and U-234.
